German is (in)famous for its long words. People love to joke around how incredibly long German words can be – and they sometimes even look impossible to pronounce. Why German has such long words is because the German language has compound words: you can simply add one word to another to create a new one. It works like maths: 1+1=2, 1+1+1=3 or 1+1+1+1=4, etc. Like for example the German word “Hausboot” (Haus+Boot=Hausboot) which you see a lot in the Dutch city of Amsterdam or “Fruchtsalat” (Frucht+Salat=Fruchtsalat) which has a lot of vitamins and is good for your health.

We have collected the 10 longest German words and its translations to English for you. Try to pronounce them just for fun! :-)
